Unifor attended Kruger’s press conference in Trois-Rivières on May 11, 2026, for the announcement of a major $333 million investment to launch a new biodegradable nonwoven materials production facility. The project will create 56 new permanent unionized jobs in Mauricie, a region that has been heavily impacted by the slowdown in forestry activities.

Invited to speak during the official announcement, Unifor Quebec Research and Strategic Planning Coordinator Simon Lavigne highlighted the critical role workers play in projects like this.

“Investments and new technologies are important, but without workers, there is no project. Workers are the ones driving innovation and who will make this new production a success every day,” said Simon Lavigne.

The project includes the construction of a new facility on Île-de-la-Potherie, adjacent to the Kruger Wayagamack mill. Operations are expected to begin in 2028.

For Unifor, this announcement sends a positive signal about the future of Quebec’s forestry and manufacturing sectors.

“Lately, the news in the forestry sector has been difficult, with closures, slowdowns and layoffs in several regions. So hearing about investments, new market opportunities and job creation is extremely refreshing. This announcement shows there are still promising opportunities capable of creating good jobs and contributing to Quebec’s collective prosperity,” added Simon Lavigne.

The future production line will manufacture biodegradable nonwoven materials primarily intended for the wipes market. The products will be made from natural fibres, without plastic or chemical additives, using a hybrid technology unique in Canada.
